Anubandha Chatushtaya: The Four That Prepare You
Parveen Nair1h 19mRecorded 27 September 2026
What this class works with
A Purnima gathering combining about 45 minutes of gentle movement with a half hour satsang on Anubandha Chatushtaya, the classical four-part framework Advaita Vedanta uses to prepare a student before entering the teaching. Parveen walks through eligibility, subject, relationship, and purpose, illustrating with the tamarind-and-bronze-plate image: practice does not create the shine, it only removes the tarnish covering what is already complete. The movement portion built through pendulums, spirals, and repeated warrior one and two sequences into three-legged dog and stepping through to standing, framed throughout as medium rather than end in itself.
In this class
- •Opening centering on 'availability' and noticing the unfolding of experience, followed by Om chant and Dhyana Shloka
- •Standing pendulum work: forward-back rock, cross pendulum, and spiral arm pattern turning right and left with hands on hips
- •Repeated warrior two to warrior one flow, transitioning into low lunge and spinal flexion, then stepping back to three-legged dog
- •Three-legged dog into high plank, four-point kneeling, child, cat and cow, cycling with stepping the leg through to standing warrior one
- •Closing ragdoll taken in stages (neck, mid back, lower back), clasped hands behind back, then squat down to constructive rest and gentle rolling
- •Satsang on Anubandha Chatushtaya: Adhikari (eligibility/preparedness), Vishaya (the subject, self-remembrance), Sambandha (one's relationship to that subject), and Prayojana (the purpose, complete eradication of sorrow rather than temporary relief)
- •Tamarind and bronze plate analogy: practice polishes away turbulence (chitta malam) but does not itself create the shine, which is already inherent
- •Brief Q&A window (no questions raised) followed by a closing minute of observing experience as an appearance of awareness, then closing chant and blessing
